Quick preggo update

Had a midwife appt last week and keep forgetting to blog it, the sleep deprivation induced haze is pretty thick, LOL.

It was just a quick appt, she stayed for only an hour as opposed to the usual 2, because the 2nd midwife couldn't make it (she was with a labouring woman) and they want to come back in the next few weeks so she can catch up with me too.
My blood pressure was low (for me anyway) again, and is kind of interesting to me...in the hospital system with the previous pregnancies my blood pressure was starting to rise about now. Homebirth and home appts more relaxing perhaps?

She felt the baby move and we just basically chatted about stuff. The boys figured out how to use the blood pressure thingy which was pretty funny and then while rifling through her bag for cool stuff to play with, Jet sat on the doppler and turned it on, scaring the crap out of all of us LOL!

So there it is...all normal and boring without any stupid scary tests or pointless ultrasounds to talk about!

Recommended Reading ;)

I may not have been blogging much myself lately but there are 2 blogs in particular that I have been enjoying following and for anyone who happens to be looking for something crunchy, inspiring, and just really interesting, as well as really getting you thinking, I highly recommend Harriet's Mama's 2 blogs :)

First there is
The Musings of Harriet's Mama
The Life & Mind of a Lotus-Water-Freebirthin', Co-Sleeping, Non-Vaccinating, Baby Wearing, Cloth Nappy Using, Elimination Communicating, Lactivist, Feminist, Mum of One.

And her second blog, serving as a sort of diary for her family's journey with Elimination Communication (you might not want to read it while eating though, I learnt that from experience, LOL).

See A Cue? Catch A Poo!
This is where I keep track of our elimination communication (EC) journey. EC is the practice of learning and watching for a baby's elimination cues and catching her poo and wee rather than leaving her to soil herself. It's about strengthening communication between baby and parents and keeping baby in touch with her instincts

Have been a little busy of late working on a new little project and I hope you will all come and check it out....

Hathor Birth Haven

Hope you are all well, and hopefully I'll be back blogging, knitting and crocheting as much as I would like to be really soon :)

And where will you be birthing?????

Watch it! I'm in it! (Unfortunately as a hospital birther, will be nice to be on the flip side in a few months!!)

Evidence based care and a holistic approach to pregnancy and birth are the birthright of every woman and baby. Homebirth provides us with a rich experience and a safe way to birth our babies and welcome them into our families.

Were you respected by your healthcare provider?

A Birth Journey

Monday, 14 January 2008

Why choose Homebirth?

Natural Birth – natural birth is important to us and we see how difficult it is to achieve normal physiological birth in a medicalised setting.

Birth after caesarean – our birthing potential is in no way diminished by previous caesareans and many women birth beautifully at home even after several surgeries.

Midwifery model of care – we choose a model of care which asserts pregnancy and birth are normal physiological states not medical emergencies.

Experience – we choose to have the most personal, intimate moments of our lives take place in our homes where our children are conceived and surrounded by people we know, trust and love.

Avoiding trauma – we choose to remove ourselves from the medical system which may have traumatised us and our babies at previous births or choose to avoid trauma with our first baby.

Breastfeeding – women who birth at home have greater support and better experiences with breastfeeding.

Siblings – we may want to have our children at the births of their siblings thus including them in the ordinary miracle of birth.

Knowledge – we choose to be active and proactive in how we labour and birth and learn as much as we can.

Gentle parenting – we want our babies to enter the world gently, without harsh lights, unnecessary intrusive procedures and strangers.

Control – we want to have complete control over the environment in which we birth without having to negotiate with strangers who have timetables and ideas about birth that don’t match our own.

Memory – we want our memories of birth to be of hard work with passion and accomplishment. We remember how we first met our babies for the rest of our lives so we owe it to us, and them, for that to be on our terms and as beautiful as we can make it.

2008 - The Year of Homebirth Awareness

Homebirth - Just Do It

Because we are too short, too tall, too thin, too small of foot, too old, too young, too wide, and our pelvises are too narrow, too small, too untried, or unproven or the wrong shape, and our uteruses are too scarred, or pointing the wrong way, or we are too multiparous, too fertile, too infertile, too female, too small, too big, too fat, too emotional, too detached, too strong, too weak, too intelligent, too well designed to birth, not designed well enough, and our vaginas are too scarred, too unproven, not stretchy enough or too stretchy, and we’re too inconvenient, too unpredictable, too demanding, too informed, too loud, too messy, and our bodies labour too long or not long enough, and our cervices don’t dilate 1cm an hour on command and because when you hire a surgeon you get surgery and hospitals are for sick people…

and so for these and many other reasons, we are part of the homebirth movement.

2008 The Year of Homebirth Awareness!!

Changing our world through one action a day.

The time has come to speak out as women and mothers about how our lives have been changed by the beauty of birthing at home. We cannot stand by as more women go through the conveyor belts of our maternity hospitals without speaking the truth –

Birth is safe, interference is risky, birth belongs at home.

Join all of us in speaking out with just one action a day, however small, and be the ripple effect as each of us across Australia speaks out to inform, normalise and honour birth.

What can you do in one day? How about these ideas?!

  • put a HOMEBIRTH sticker on your car, pram, bicycle helmet, letterbox, gate, fence, front door
  • sew a homebirth patch on your sling or wrap
  • get a note in your school newsletter
  • put your homebirth pics on youtube
  • drop off JB pamphlets and info on normal physiological birth to your local medical centre
  • tell someone about your homebirth, past, present, or planned
  • write a letter to your daily, local or national newspaper
  • buy a homebirth book for your local library, don't forget the kids' section
  • talk to your community group, ABA group, mothers' group however casually you like
  • tell your GP if you have one
  • tell your natural therapists and give them some JB brochures
  • carry a JB tote bag
  • take a few pamphlets everywhere just in case the need arises
  • say "Homebirth is lovely" on mainstream internet forums
  • change your sig to something supportive of homebirth on mainstream forums
  • put a link to JB on your website, blog, community group website or anywhere else you can
  • give a voucher for JOY to friends who aren't members (and some who are)
  • give gift vouchers from Capers
  • host a showing of BOBB in your local area and invite the newspapers
  • go to anything women-related and talk about homebirth - WEL, CWA, IWD.....
  • do some community-minded graffiti or even a mural!
  • write stuff on toilet walls in maternity hospitals
  • do some Wiki edits
  • put a homebirth quote in your email sig
  • ring the radio when talkback time is on and say all health matters would be solved by women having babies at home
  • do an essay at uni about it if you can, or a tutorial presentation
  • wear a homebirth tshirt, put homebirth clothes on innocent children who can't protest
